Dr. J. Brantley Thrasher, M.D., F.A.C.S. Dr. J. Brantley Thrasher is Professor and William L. Valk Chair of Urology and the Co-Director of the Operative Services at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. A native of South Carolina, he completed his medical degree at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina, an internship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and his urology residency at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado. He subsequently completed a urologic oncology and reconstructive fellowship at Duke University Medical Center. He served as Program Director for the Urology Residency Program at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington, for three years and was appointed to his present position in 1998.

Dr Thrasher has served on numerous national committees, including the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) and the Public Media, Prostate Cancer Guidelines and Audio-Visual Committees of the American Urolgical Association. He is a member of the Executive Board and Chairman of the Fellowship Committee for the Society of Urologic Oncology, Chairman of the Metropolitan Kansas City Committee on Applicants of the American College of Surgeons, the Kansas State Representative to the Board of Directors of the South Central Section of the American Urological Association and the South Central Section Representative to the American Urological Association Research Council. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Urology and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr Thrasher has received numerous honors and awards including Ingram’s Business Magazine, Best Doctors 2003 and 2004, Best Doctors 2002 and 2007 by Kansas City Magazine and one of the Best Doctors in America for 2002 through 2006 by the Best Doctors Consortium. Additionally, he was chosen as one of America’s Top Physicians in Urologic Oncology by the Consumers’ Research Council of America 2003, 2006 and 2007.

In addition to giving over 300 presentations at local, national and international meetings, he has written over 150 papers, book chapters, monographs and abstracts in the field of urology. He has been visiting professor at 22 institutions and serves a a reviewer for 6 journals. He currently serves as Co-ordinating Editor for Practical Reviews in Urology, Specialty Editor for the Journal of Urology, on the Editorial Board for the journals Prostate Cancer and Prostate Diseases. He is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of American Family Physician (one of the largest circulations of any medical journal), and is an Associate Editor for the book “The 5-Minute Urology Consult,” . Additionally, he serves on the Editorial Council for the Urology Times and Section Editor of Cancer Prevention in the journal Seminars in Urologic Oncology.

Dr. Thrasher is involved in both basic science and clinical research in the development of new diagnostic techniques and treatments for prostate, bladder and kidney cancer. He is the principal investigator on numerous clinical and laboratory research protocols. Additionally, he is currently a co-investigator or collaborator in research funded by the Centers for Disease Control and the Department of Defense.
